Buying a home is exciting, but there are a lot of decisions between starting your search and getting the keys.

Whether you're purchasing your first home in Peterborough, looking for more space, downsizing, relocating to the area, or searching for a property in the Kawarthas, I'm here to help make the process easier to understand and navigate.

I'm Janette Obert, Broker, and I help buyers throughout Peterborough, Ontario and the surrounding Kawarthas find homes that fit their needs, lifestyle and future plans.

My goal isn't simply to help you find a house. It's to help you make an informed decision and feel confident about the home you're buying.

First-Time Home Buyers in Peterborough

Buying Your First Home? Let's Make It Easier to Understand.

Your first home purchase comes with plenty of new terminology, paperwork and decisions.

You don't need to become a real estate expert before buying your first home. That's what your professional team is there to help with.

I'll help you understand the buying process from your initial search through offer preparation and closing.

There are also government programs that eligible first-time buyers may want to investigate. For example, Ontario offers qualifying first-time buyers a land transfer tax refund of up to $4,000. The federal First Home Savings Account (FHSA) also provides eligible first-time buyers with a tax-advantaged way to save toward a qualifying home.

Eligibility and program rules can change, so it's important to confirm current requirements with the appropriate government agency and your financial or legal professionals.

Buying a Rural Property Around Peterborough?

Depending on the property, you may need to investigate things such as:

Well Water
Where does the home's water come from? Buyers may want to understand the well type, water quantity and water quality.

Septic Systems
You'll want to understand the property's septic system, its location, age, maintenance history and condition.

Road Access
Is the property located on a municipally maintained road, private road or seasonal road?

Heating & Utilities
Rural homes may use propane, oil, wood, electric systems or combinations of heating sources.

Internet & Cell Service
If you work from home, don't assume every rural property has the connectivity you need.

Property Boundaries & Land
Larger parcels can introduce additional considerations involving boundaries, easements, zoning and permitted uses.

When buying rural real estate around Peterborough County and the Kawarthas, doing your homework before purchasing is especially important.
